Post Kodicom Xubuntu: xawtv ok; zm not: Aborted (core dumped)
Hello,

I have been trying for a while to get zoneminder 1.22.3 to work under xubuntu (ubuntu version with xfce default desktop). I've installed zoneminder using Peter Howard's .deb for Debian unstable, 1.22.3-6. The DVR card seems to be detected properly; the camera works fine under xawtv. But running zmu produces the following:

Code:
fede@fede-desktop:~$ zmu -d /dev/video0 -q -v
Aborted (core dumped)

I can't get any monitors running under zoneminder: I never get an image, and the link to the device always displays in red (which I suppose must be because there is a problem with it, since the same happened when I pointed to the nonexistant device /dev/video by mistake).

As far as I can tell (not too much, btw :)), the card itself seems to be working, because I can see myself in xawtv; I just can't get it to play with zoneminder. There are some errors in zmdc.log and zmwatch.log, as well.

Thanks in advance for any help!!!

Federico.

I am using a Kodicom 4400R DVR card, so I included the following lines in
/etc/modprobe.d/aliases:
Code:
alias char-major-81-* bttv

/etc/modprobe.d/options:
Code:

I attach the full logs in tar.gz here: http://www.camaragnc.org/data/zm_logs-fede.tar.gz

Something is amiss as this all looks good.
Are you sure ZM is running?
Do you have zm.conf set for the same user/group as apache?
What permisions does zmfix have?

Thanks for the quick reply!

How can I find out if ZM is running? I can see the web page allright, add a monitor, change options. If I restart it, there appear to be no errors, and I can confirm this in the logs:

Code:
05/02/2007 16:52:26.394585 zmdc[5379].INF [Server shutdown at 07/05/02 16:52:26]
05/02/2007 16:52:27.225049 zmdc[5578].INF [Server starting at 07/05/02 16:52:27]
05/02/2007 16:52:30.820746 zmdc[5578].INF ['zmc -d /dev/video0' starting at 07/05/02 16:52:30, pid = 5600]
05/02/2007 16:52:30.865841 zmdc[5578].ERR ['zmc -d /dev/video0' exited abnormally, exit status 255]
05/02/2007 16:52:30.866629 zmdc[5578].INF [Starting pending process, zmc -d /dev/video0]

I have just supposed that this meant that zm was running - am I wrong?

zm.conf belongs to www-data; apache to root. I can't find out anything else about www-data: I can't see this user belonging to any groups in the graphical user management tool (and I don't know how to do it from the command line yet). Is this the problem?

Code:
fede@fede-desktop:/etc/zm$ l
total 8
-rw-r--r-- 1 root     root      211 2007-04-16 01:44 apache.conf
-rw------- 1 www-data www-data 1329 2007-04-16 01:44 zm.conf
fede@fede-desktop:/etc/zm$

zmfix belongs to root.

Code:
fede@fede-desktop:/$ l /usr/bin/zmf*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 263288 2007-04-16 01:44 /usr/bin/zmf
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root  29823 2007-04-16 01:44 /usr/bin/zmfilter.pl
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root  38808 2007-04-16 01:44 /usr/bin/zmfix

Thanks a lot!

Run this from the command line:
Code:
chmod 4755 /usr/bin/zmfix

Then restart ZM.

Thanks a lot, Cordel!!!

It is working now. Wonderful!

zmu -d /dev/video0 -q -v doesn't yet work, though: I still see the aborted (core dumped) message. I hope this won't be a problem for anything else; not that I think it's important right now, I only know that zmu -d ... -q -v is supposed to give some info about the hardware or something like that... er...

Thanks again.

I know this is a little old, but I get "aborted (core dumped)" on ubuntu if I try to run that command and forget to "sudo" in front of it.

+1
I just wanted to echo my experience with Ubunbu 7.04 Feisty Fawn that I needed to duplicate this to get it running. Also, as noted, I needed to use sudo in order to get zmu to run.

I replaced the Card with a Kodicom clone, and now the video is coming and going, video, blue screen, video, blue screen, and I touch the card and it is hot, the card came with heat sinks on its bttv chips, but are too damn tiny, I got bigger ones, but the ones in it, are too damn hard to take off...

Why is soo damn hot??? the prev, Techwell 6805 was cool... but driver is jumpy...

Seems like your monitors are conflicting, as happened here:
http://www.zoneminder.com/forums/viewto ... dicom+8800

You should try deleting all monitors and re-creating them one by one with lots of care regarding the device and channel.
