I just tried the arch Live CD of ZM and my USB webcams started working right away. How can I get the same webcams to work in the wde-zoneminder version.

You would need to build all the drivers for the web cams. Ross does this by default on all his LiveCD's. I haven't seen Arron on here in a while but maybe he has a solution to this in WDE otherwise you would need to build the drivers.

Which distro do you think is the best. I got 848 pico cards in a Chubb Security DVR. But I also want to hook up a usb cam.

It will be 15 cams in total all doing motion detection.

Also what specs should the machine have.

I've been using zoneminder to run security alongside my wireless hotspot's, something I was trying to do over a year ago. The wde-zoneminder dvd should work with most webcams. I installed uvc, pwc, and about half a dozen other drivers. Every usb webcam I had just worked, so i'm not sure what's up with the webcam in question.
